A developer's thoughts, stories and ideas

Gaming analytics

So recently, I've starting to look into recording my play sessions or replays in some games and gathering analytics on my performance to gain insight on what I'm doing. In particular, I've dug up my old Tobii eye tracker and started using it to see where I'm looking in games like League of Legends. It's quite useful to know where I'm looking during critical points in the game, since it'll show what I'm paying attention to and what I should be paying attention to.

I've also started to record my play sessions in Osu, during the few times I decide to play. Just recording Osu wouldn't be any fun though, so I've added my eye tracking as well as a heart rate monitor. Good gamers will keep their heart rate low, since it'll keep them calm and focused. I have the same idea here, so I can see if or when my heart rate is high and to work on keeping it down. Maybe in the future, I can analyze the video files for Osu to see my overall performance.

Work events

I've only ever participated in 1 work event previously at my previous company, ImageX. At ImageX, we decided to participate in an Escape Room. This was pretty fun since I enjoy solving puzzles and such. At my new company, Fortinet, we decided to go Bowling. Of course, this event was decided by my team and only my team participated. I'm sure other teams have fun events too, but obviously we can't just have all of the employees participate, besides going to PNE which we did a couple months ago. I didn't join that one, since I can't deal with heights and most of those attractions play around with heights.

Anyways, back to bowling. We had a pizza buffet along with our 3 bowling lanes. What I want to talk about is bowling technique. Usually, people bowl by putting 2 fingers and thumb into the bowling ball and rolling it underhanded. The issue with the mentioned way is that it's hard to curve the ball and sometimes the ball will curve due to the lane oil. I decided to try a new way of bowling which was similar to the previous process, but included rotating the wrist to add a spin. To make sure I could spin properly, I only used 2 fingers to hold onto the ball. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to utilize this method properly, but did get 1 good strike with a curve going from the middle, to the far right side almost in the gutter, back to the perfect near center position from the side.
